Lombard family from Co. Cork, Ireland

General Information

Unfortunately I have very little information on the Lombard family except that they came from Lombardstown, Co. Cork. There is very little information on the main genealogy sites. At present the church records, for the Church of Ireland, do not appear to have been recorded by these sites. I have found information from the Ffolliott Collection but this is not as good as the main genealogy sites where often there is an image of the original parish record. Also by writing to the library in Cork and also visiting in 1993 I have information from newspapers and books. More recently there is information I have gleaned from the internet by Googling various names.

The Lombard surname has appeared in the Cork area for centuries and they were Sheriffs and Mayors of Cork City and High Sheriffs of County Cork. In 1750 a James Lombard was High Sheriff of the County of Cork. His ancestors had acquired land in Gortmaoluidhre and he changed the name to Lombardstown and built a house there about 1740. I have not been able to certify if Mehetabel Lombard, my 3x great grandmother, is a descendant of his possibly a niece. I think she was born in 1778 as there is a record of a baptism in her name. Family records mention a Rev. William Lombard who may be her brother, but this may not be correct.

I have found a will of an Elizabeth Lombard, a spinster and daughter of James Lombard, who died on 2 December 1871 and she left £50 to James Bennett Kift’s children, of whom my great grandmother, Elizabeth Kift, was one. Elizabeth Lombard, born in 1793, was one of four daughters of a James Lombard who also was one of the Lombardstown families. So obviously there is a family connection and I suspect Elizabeth Lombard was a first cousin of James Bennett Kift.

At present this is an ongoing investigation and will be updated when more information comes to hand.

The death of Elizabeth Lombard as it was printed in the Belfast News Letter on 10 December 1871.
