• He emigrated from Bermondsey, London to the Cape of Good Hope between March 1817 and June 1818, since his first child was born in London in March 1817 and he was given permission to remain in the Colony in June 1818. 7,12

Harriet married James Bennett Kift, son of William Kift and Mehetabel Lombard, on 4 Feb 1841 in Cape Town, South Africa.23 James was born on 20 Jan 1811 in Cork, Ireland40 and died on 3 Feb 1861 in Cape Town41 at age 50.

General Notes: He was keen on photography. In a letter written to Bell, his sister in Cork, a month before he died he thanks her for sending out a camera from Ireland but there was obviously a problem with it which he tried to fix. (Original letter written in his own hand. Dated 20 Jan 1861)
In the Inventory of his furniture and belongings, performed after he died, one of the rooms (Room 5) was dedicated to photography with 2 cameras, boxes with photographic chemicals, a stereoscopic camera, a box containing glass plates and portrait cases to name a few of the contents. The inventory also lists one room (Room 2) with desks, forms and a marking board. This must be where he taught his pupils.(Inventory of furniture and belongings. Date 6 Feb 1861)
In the letter to his sister in Ireland he also mentions he wishes he knew more of his mother's family (Lombard). He thanks Bell for sending information on the Kift family. (Original letter written in his own hand. Dated 20 Jan 1861)

• In 1843 he printed a still image he named "Pet of the Ballet". This image is from a series of eight. It is thought he also painted some of the images. Examples of prints from the series are held at The Victoria and Albert Museum in London. 68

• In 1851 he was receiving a Pension from Greenwich Hospital Civil Service. (Possibly the Royal Hospital for Seamen at Greenwich) 69

• He had a residence in 1861 at 28 Victualling Office Row, Deptford. 70

Her travel logs were exceptional. She wrote of the places she visited with such detail that it was as if she had a photographic memory. In the days before the 'pocket camera' this was her way of recording her holidays.

Noted events in her life were:

• In 1862 Elizabeth Lombard (cousin) of Eastly, near Mallow, Co.Cork, left a legacy of £50 to Elizabeth and her six brothers. It was to be divided among them as their aunt, Mehetabel Kift, saw fit (£50 in 1862 equivalent to £3,000 in 2017) She died in 1871. 90

• She was confirmed on 22 Apr 1866 in Rhondebosch Church, Cape Town. 91

• She received a Wedding gift of £50 from her Aunt Bell in Cork 92

• She travelled from Cape Town to England in 1888 with Edmund, Adolph and Eddie to put the boys in boarding school. 93

• On 22 March 1889 she and Edmund travelled to Cork, via Dublin, to see her aunt Bell. They stayed in Cork 6 days. Went back to Dublin. On 1 April they went on to Edinburgh and met up with Maggie Grindlay, Edmund's cousin. Returned to London on 13 April. 94

• She travelled in May 1889 from England to the Cape to collect her younger children. She left the Cape on 26th June with them on the 'Trojan". 95,96,97

• From 29 Aug to 13 Sept 1896 she, Eddie and Irene had a holiday in France and Switzerland. They travelled by train via Paris & Lyon to Lausanne where they stayed for 10 days. They took day trips up mountains & on lakes. Spent 3 days in Paris on return. 98

• She lived with the family at 86 Abbey Road, Hampstead in 1896. 98

• In 1899 she and the family were living in Herne Hill. 99

• She had a holiday in Cassel, Germany in April 1899. Not sure who she traveled with. Thorough descriptions of places visited and people she met. 99

• In May 1901 she travelled with Cherry & Cyril to Cassel in Germany where she settled Cyril into school there. She and Cherry stayed a month. They visited all the sites and towns in the vicinity sometimes with Cyril. 98

• In July 1904, after receiving a wire relating that her aunt, Bell, in Cork had had a bad fall, she travelled immediately to be with her. Mehetabel Kift died a few days after she arrived in Cork. 100

• She travelled in Aug 1906 from South Africa to England. 101

• From at least 1909 to 1944 she was living at 36 Stradella Road, Herne HIll, London SE24 102,103

• She was registered under the National Registration Act, 1915 104

• She and Edmund travelled to South Africa and Australia to visit his daughter-in-law, Mabel, and grandchildren in Tasmania, leaving on 9 Dec 1921. Travelled back on S.S. "Rimutaka", NZ Shipping Co. Embarking at Wellington. Arrived back on 29 August 1922. 105,106

• She, Edmund and Geraldine arrived back at Southampton on 9 Jun 1927 from their 5 week holiday in Naples. They traveled first class on the ship "Orama". 105

• She appeared on the census in 1939 in Worthing, Sussex staying at The Towers, Grand Avenue and described as incapicitated by old age. She was with Irene, her daughter. 107

• She had an estate probated in 1945 in Llandudno, Wales, on 4 January 1945 to Irene Melita Heckrath (daughter) Effects £14336 6s 6d. 108

Elizabeth married Edmund Walter Heckrath, son of Adolph Heckrath and Charlotte Rebecca Smith, on 12 Oct 1875 in St.Cyprians Church, Kimberley, Griqualand West, South Africa.109.,110 Edmund was born on 9 Oct 1848 in Cape Town,111 was christened on 22 Jan 1849 in Lutherern Church, Cape Town,111 and died on 26 Jul 1935 in 36 Stradella Road, Herne Hill, London57,112 at age 86.

• He obtained a Diamond Licence on 15 Aug 1872 in Kimberley, South Africa, trading as Cohen Heckrath & Co., to buy, sell and deal in Diamonds within the Territory of Griqualand West. 116

Irene was obviously very interested in her family history and there are plenty of note books and scraps of paper with information. She attempted to record, by typing, her great grandfather's letter book. In 1953 she decided to take some family historical documents and items to deposit in the Archives in Cape Town. They included her great grandfather's letter book, her grandfather's school arithmetic school book, many old family photographs and other items such as old ivory fans. However she didn't take everything and in 1960 travelled to Melbourne, Australia, to give her nephew, Dan Heckrath, other family items which included old letters, documents, note books, odd notes, photographs and even old plates. There were still family items left in the house in London when she died which included her Birthday Book and the painting of her Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Theresia Heckrath nιe Siedel, which was damaged in the WWII, when a bomb exploded in the street. [My mother gave me the Birthday Book after Irene died and I have recently had it restored. The painting of Elizabeth Theresia Heckrath I have hanging on the wall in my study where I do my genealogy! General Notes: Mother told me she worked with John Maynard Keynes, the famous economist whose General Theory of Money, Interest & Employment (pub in 1936) provided the theoretical underpinning for the mixed economy and welfare state which ensured the relative prosperity of the post-war era. She remembered Keynes being a brilliant and witty man. She says that on a rather non-committal internal memo from a Lord Catto, Keynes scribbled "Catto lying doggo!" At the Treasury one of mother's jobs was to coordinate information on how the Dig for Victory campaign was faring. A few years ago we found a report she had written on potato production at a time when parks and gardens were being dug up to provide food during the U boat blockade.
